Introduction & Context

“When Justice Calls” is a suspenseful Old West Cowboy Western tale set in Sagebrush, Montana. When Federal Marshal JP McAllister is summoned back to Sagebrush, he does not expect to be ambushed by lowlifes. He is even more surprised by the order to hunt his longtime friend and former colleague, Jarvis Tate, who is wanted for murder.

After brief encounters with other war buddies, Sheriff Wallace and Mayor Kay, McAllister soon uncovers the rot in the town’s administration. His once upstanding friends have become perpetrators of murder, nepotism, and corruption- they have no integrity left, no respect for the rule of law. McAllister takes it upon himself to ensure justice is served. Amidst attempted murder, bribery, and manipulation, McAllister renders the ultimate punishment to the villains- the gallows.

Strengths

Reading the book is an absolute delight from start to finish. The author’s creative use of imagery is evident throughout the book, transporting the reader to the scene with vivid descriptions

The skillful use of suspense keeps the reader engaged and invested in the story, eagerly turning the pages to see what will happen next. In addition, there is spectacular choice in words, scenery, and characters to fit the 1800s setting. The author incorporates informal language and another English dialect without making it difficult for modern readers to understand. The unexpected infusion of humor and sarcasm in multiple scenes makes the book even more enjoyable.

From the beautiful imagery to the engaging story and wonderful writing, this book is a gem no reader should miss. Fans of Old Western tales, suspenseful fiction, or simply great writing would appreciate this book.

Weaknesses

While it is an interesting and suspenseful read, “When Justice Calls” has a few drawbacks. Some readers may not be familiar with the Southern/Western English dialect and some of the informal words used. However, such instances are rare and unlikely to have any significant effect on the reader’s experience. The different English dialect, although barely used, is appropriate for the late 1800s context

The occasional grammar mistakes may be off-putting for very keen readers but may go unnoticed by the majority

Another minor drawback is that some characters are underdeveloped. While the main characters are well-rounded and interesting, some supporting characters are not given as much depth and may feel like caricatures rather than fully-realized individuals. Understandably, the author may not want to deviate the story from the main characters.

It is worth nothing that When Justice Calls is not just a good Cowboy Western, it is a good suspenseful and adventure filled book that any reader will enjoy
