Introduction & Context

Over the years, there has been a steady rise in the number of successful start-ups that have managed to successfully compete with large Enterprises. They are able to do so because large Enterprises are very slow to evolve and adapt

Mr. McDermott proposes ‘Team Amplifiers’ – a set of 8 amplifiers which will allow corporations to evolve and adapt fast and to become more efficient. These Amplifiers are all focused on making teams more efficient, more dynamic and more adaptable

Main Review

Team Amplifiers is a Teamwork and Team Strategy book which will allow Teams, and every member in a Team, to give their best

Perhaps, most importantly, Team Amplifiers will help Teams to deal rapidly with Change and to evolve and meet challenges and opportunities

The majority of people have specific objectives for what they want to accomplish in a given time frame, such as a day, a month, or a year. Everyone has days when they wish they could have been more productive. This book shows how members in your team can accomplish more

Team Amplifiers by Eric McDermott shows that you don’t have to be the team leader to benefit from these 8 ‘Team Amplifiers’. Even if you are not the team leader, you can learn from this book and can contribute more to your team and become a better team member

Team Amplifiers is a direct and succinct Business Guide. The Book is written as a Team Development guide which allows you to make your team stronger and better able to deal with Change. It’s perfect for Team Leaders who want their teams to be more successful and productive. It encourages team leaders to invest in the best resource at hand: their Team

Eric McDermott is a pioneer in helping people grow, accelerate success, and develop their business. In his book, Team Amplifiers, he describes everything needed to measure, manage, and elevate a Team’s Culture. If you’re looking to build a team that can adapt to whatever comes next, this book is for you.

Based on his own experience, including decades of assisting people in learning to be adaptable for what’s next, McDermott founded the company NEXTpectations® and created a new position, Chief Next Officer®, to lead the charge in helping accelerate success. Comprised of eight Team Amplifiers, this Book is designed to help the reader improve their team’s mindset, habits, systems, and plans. By improving these areas, the team and its members can become more productive, happier, and more successful

Eric McDermott offers in-depth guidance on how to enhance each of the eight Team Amplifiers. He frequently gives advice in list-based formats, which is useful for getting a quick overview of the information.

McDermott’s personal experiences also help to make him relatable and trustable. This, in turn, makes his strategies much more achievable and approachable. This book is an easy-to-use resource for increasing your team’s productivity. It is a very powerful book for anyone who wants to become a more impactful team leader (or team member)

Strengths

The 8 Team Amplifiers are each very powerful in their own right. There are no fillers

The major ideas are well explained and have good examples to help understand them fully

Eric McDermott asks a series of questions at the end of each chapter (there is one chapter devoted to each Team Amplifier). This helps the reader better understand each Team Amplifier

Weaknesses

There are only 1 or 2 examples for each Team Amplifier. It would have been great to get 3 to 4 examples for each Team Amplifier

The book is somewhat predictable. This is not necessarily a bad thing for a business book

The tying together of the 8 Team Amplifiers is missing. There should have been a few chapters at the end, which would tie everything together. It would also help to have a few chapters that explain the synergies between these 8 Team Amplifiers (and the possible conflicts)

There should have been an in-depth example at the end of the book showing a company incorporating each of these 8 Team Amplifiers one by one. Admittedly, the downside of this would be that the length of the book would double and might scare off some busy team leaders. Perhaps the best solution would be a workbook companion or a second book in the series

Trigger Warning

No Trigger Warnings

Overall Thoughts

Team Amplifiers is a succinct and powerful and impactful book. It will make you rethink what you think about Teams and Team Productivity

Equally importantly, it will give you 8 Team Amplifiers which will allow you to supercharge your Team and empower each Team Member

The amount of value in the book is amazing, and it’s impressive that Mr. McDermott has fit it all into a reasonably sized book

Overall Recommendation

Strongly Recommended for anyone who wants to lead strong teams and/or be a strong team member

For Team Leaders – 80/100

For Team Members – 75/100

Curator’s Thoughts (not the reviewer, the curator)

This is an exceptionally important book. Companies have Teams as their building blocks. Any book that allows a company (or a leader) to unlock the power of these building blocks is worth its weight in gold

Eric McDermott has written exactly such a book

If you are a Team Leader this book is an absolute must read. We had both a Team Leader and a Team Member read and review the book. It was interesting that both had very positive views of the book

While the book is perfect for any Team Leader, it is also a book worth sharing with every Team Member. Many of the 8 Team Amplifiers are things every motivated Team Member would be able to understand and implement themselves. However, Team Members would probably need the help and mentorship of their Manager/Mentor to fully understand and implement all 8 Team Amplifiers

Given that the book is a relatively quick read, we recommend it very strongly. It will give you 8 powerful Team Amplifiers you can leverage to make your own teams much stronger. Even if you don’t relate to all 8 Team Amplifiers, each of the 8 Team Amplifiers is very powerful in itself. You can pick and choose which Amplifiers you want to implement into your own Teams
