  • Editorial Review of Goddess from the Lost Planet – A SciFi Adventure of Gods & Aliens (From Heaven to Earth Series) by Neal Roberts

Goddess from the Lost Planet – Editorial Review

Goddess from the Lost Planet by Neal Roberts is a well-written and fast-paced Archaeological Thriller & Science Fiction Adventure which would make a great movie. It’s a very solid read

The author mentions that his Publicist, Aurora Publicity, made him change the book genre from Historical Fiction to Science Fiction + Archaeological Thriller. This was a great decision. Goddess from the Lost Planet is an artfully written book which is a heady mix of Dan Brown Archaeological Thriller and Historical Alien Action & Adventure

Books Butterfly Editorial Review of Goddess from the Lost Planet by Neal Roberts

    Introduction & Context

Goddess from the Lost Planet takes around 6 chapters before you really start getting a feel for the book. After that it is a very enjoyable thrill ride

This is a book that could have chosen to narrow itself to any one of

    1. Ancient Egyptian Historical Fiction
    2. Archaeological Thriller
    3. Science Fiction
    4. Alien Conspiracy Non Fiction
    5. Action & Adventure

Instead, the author mixes all these together and comes up with a book which is a great read

    Main Review

Goddess from the Lost Planet is a blockbuster movie in book form (in a good way). After a slow start where the author tries to make the hero more relatable (which may or may not work for you), the book transforms into a really satisfying read with lots of excitement and adventure

The writing is intricate and simple at the same time. This requires a very high level of writing skill and makes the book a joy to read. It is interesting that the author was thinking of writing this book as a Historical Fiction novel earlier. The bar for Historical Fiction is very high and the author would have met that bar

The book being a mix of genres works for it. It’s quite fortunate because a disconcertingly high percentage of authors trying to combine genres make a total mess. This is a well crafted book which will appeal to readers across book genres

Perhaps the best thing I can say about the book is that the characters in this book were in my thoughts, both the waking ones and the sleeping ones. It is a book that will stay with you

    Strengths

The writing is excellent. The story is fast paced and well thought out. The background of the Anunnaki (aliens from the Planet Nibiru) is very intriguing and will really draw you into the story

The characters are very alive and well characterized. Even the smaller supporting characters have panache and personality

The book itself moves at a rapid pace and entertains

There are a lot of moving parts, and they all fit in rather well as the story progresses. Really, this is quite an accomplishment as the book brings together different book genres and combines a lot of history and theory and science. The author molding everything into a congruent and coherent plot line is very impressive

    Weaknesses

The book has its up and downs and you will have to put up with a slow start (power through the first 5/6 chapters to get to the good part)

There are some things that are rather unrealistic. Even for a Science Fiction Adventure set in 2034

Warning: Mini Spoilers. Skip these 3 points and jump to the Next Section (Conclusion) if you don’t want mini spoilers

    1. The Anunnaki had rules against killing sentient creatures. A dangerous race of Aliens have Principles that they won’t kill you? Makes them far less scary
    2. The female character seemed to be someone designed for the hero to fall in love with. From the first time she is introduced it is clear what the author intends her role in the story to be
    3. The Hero falls in love with the female lead after a couple of kisses. Frankly, that was absurd

Really, 80% of the problems with the book would disappear if the author stopped playing up the ‘Professor is barely over his dead wife and is so emotionally vulnerable’ angle. Interestingly enough, the normal interactions between the hero and the female lead are pretty amazing. It’s only when the author forces in a bit of insta-love romance that things start falling apart

    Conclusion

Goddess from the Lost Planet is a really good read

It’s 90/100 if you like Archaeological Thrillers like the Dan Brown Novels

It’s 80/100 if you like Science Fiction Thrillers. Important Note: Please keep in mind that this book is more Archaeological Thriller/Adventure than Science Fiction

It’s 90/100 if you like Action & Adventure. You will have to get through the slower first 6 chapters before the book really takes off and turns into a thrill a minute adventure

Overall, it’s 85/100 for the general reader. It has universal appeal – Anyone who likes a well written novel, will love this book

    Overall Recommendation

Very Strongly Recommended for anyone who likes Thrillers and Archaeological Thrillers. 90/100

Very Strongly Recommended for anyone who likes Action & Adventure. 90/100

Decent Read for anyone who likes Science Fiction Thrillers. 80/100

Strongly Recommended for anyone looking for a book that is a good read. 85/100

It’s a very good book. As it is a mix of genres it is worth reading a few chapters and making sure it’s your cup of tea. If it is, you will find it to be a very fine Darjeeling Tea

Curator’s Thoughts (not the reviewer, the curator)

The reviewer had a bit of a love-hate relationship with the book

There are some parts which made the reviewer want to pull their hair out – the insta-love; the Aliens who don’t kill Sentient life; the banter between the hero and the female lead

There are also parts which the reviewer absolutely loved – how well the book combined so much science, history, speculation into a cohesive whole; the thrill a minute nature of it after the 6th chapter; the travel across various locales; the description of the aliens’ technologies, the cool links to ancient history

On the whole, the book is a very good read. By going with Archaeological Thriller and Science Fiction Adventure the author has opened up the book’s commercial prospects massively. This would make a very good movie series or a Television series. With the relative shortage of good material, and the huge number of subscription services hungry for good books to build off of, the author should seriously pursue TV and Movie deals

We think any reader will enjoy the book. The writing skill level is very high and the book transports you very well into the story world. You almost feel a part of it and really get invested into the characters and the storyline

  • Editorial Review for Quantum Action: Life Beyond Artificiality by Lee Jakeman

Quantum Action: Life Beyond Artificiality – Editorial Review

Quantum Action: Life Beyond Artificiality by Mr. Lee Jakeman is one of those rare books which can set you free to See Reality As It Really Is

Attempts to expand human consciousness and elevate human existence have come from three main directions

    1. A Mystic/Spiritual direction
    2. A Scientific direction
    3. A Philosophical direction

Lee Jakeman audaciously combines all three (the Mystic, the Scientific, the Philosophical) and creates a book that will transform your understanding of the Nature of Reality, if you allow it to

Books Butterfly Editorial Review of Quantum Action – Life Beyond Artificiality by Lee Jakeman

    Introduction & Context

At its core, Quantum Action is a Guide to Enlightenment – a book with the power to set the reader free and elevate their consciousness

In today’s modern world, we live in a Golden Cage created by Artificial Intelligence (a wrong interpretation of reality). Instead of the true knowledge which lies within us, we get trapped by the un-real/artificial/fake intelligence our society, our friends, our environment, and our family are teaching us

Quantum Action is a book which will get the reader in touch with the Real Intelligence residing within the reader

    Main Review

Quantum Action: Life Beyond Artificiality is a thought-provoking analysis of the often-overlooked yet significant difference between the real and the artificial

Lee Jakeman refutes the popularized belief that money is the root of all evil. Instead, he associates evil with the conflation of real intelligence with artificial intelligence. Here, artificial intelligence is not to be confused with the emerging use of computers and other machines to replicate human intelligence. The author presents real intelligence as a gift given at birth and artificial intelligence as the product of conditioning, upbringing, and training

Throughout the book, the author defines concepts that can be classified as either real or artificial. He distinguishes learning from recording, knowledge from information, truth from data, insight from thought, science from materialism, and religion from superstition

According to the author, artificial intelligence is limiting, and people can only overcome these limitations through real intelligence, which emerges from quantum action – what the religious call “God’s will”

The author offers valuable insight into living a more fulfilling life without self-imposed limitations. He recommends meditation to overcome worry, anxiety, and frustration, attain unprecedented calmness, and regain control over one’s life. He emphasizes the need to live in the present, as through this, people can relax, begin the process of enlightenment, and live rightly

    Strengths

The book’s main strength is the author’s extensive use of intriguing analogies and anecdotes to simplify complex concepts and ideas. The relatable and engaging analogies make concepts that would otherwise be difficult for some readers to understand understandable, interesting, and memorable

The analogies also break the monotony that may occur in science and philosophy books, enabling the reader to keep going. In several instances, the author inserts clever humor, appropriate for the target audience, to make the reading more enjoyable. The reader may connect with the material on a deeper level when the information presented is more than just dry facts and figures

Further, the author makes numerous references to other respectable authors indicating that he is well-read and knowledgeable. Through the other authors, Jakeman gives more succinct definitions of some concepts and different perspectives on contentious issues. The reader gets ideas for further reading from the quoted texts. It is unlikely that anyone will go through the book without spotting other, possibly insightful, reads.

    Weaknesses

The book’s weaknesses relate majorly to the subject of the book rather than the writing itself. The author is focused on providing facts on the real, the artificial, and a life without limitations. The aim is not entertaining the readers and this creates some unique challenges

The author barely uses suspense or the overly colorful language found in drama and other fictional pieces, so Quantum Action may appear boring to some readers. Still, the language used, including the seemingly complex terminology, is appropriate for the topics the author ventures into. Colorful language, suspense, imagery, and other common literary devices would only water down the author’s message of enlightenment. The kind of readers the book will attract would hopefully have no comprehension difficulties and would stay interested despite the deep and complex subject matter

The author quotes a few theories by other authors that may not be common knowledge to some readers. One may be forced to pause the reading to familiarize oneself with some of these theories. Otherwise, it is easy to misunderstand or misinterpret the author’s message

Finally, and perhaps necessarily, the author deviates from the known meanings of terms such as artificial intelligence and metaverse, so the reader needs to go through the book carefully, relying on the author’s definitions rather than assumptions and past information.

    Conclusion

Quantum Action is not everyone’s cup of tea, like any other book. Issues of science and philosophy are not entertaining to some. However, it is a perfect read for those seeking something more than entertainment, including knowledge, insight, and enlightenment. Quantum Action is for those individuals who hunger for a better understanding of life, strive to be more fulfilled, and seek freedom from fear, anxiety, and frustration

    Overall Recommendation

Very Strongly Recommended for anyone who wants to elevate their consciousness and attain wisdom and true knowledge

100/100 for anyone seeking Enlightenment and the True Nature of Reality

90/100 for anyone looking to expand their mind, even if they are not yet quite sure they want to reach a higher level of consciousness

80/100 for the general reader of Spirituality books, New Age books, and Self Help books

Warning: This book is going to be a hard read for anyone who believes very strongly in their current societal programming. If you think everything you have been taught is true, then you will really struggle and might have some real soul searching moments while, and after, reading Quantum Action by Mr. Lee Jakeman

Curator’s Thoughts (not the reviewer, the curator)

This book (Quantum Action) is a very, very ambitious endeavor. The Eastern countries approach the meaning of life from a mystical and spiritual perspective. The Western countries approach the meaning of life from a scientific perspective (and sometimes from a philosophical perspective)

The author, Lee Jakeman, has combined the spiritual, the philosophical, and the scientific

We find Mr. Jakeman’s background very interesting. His 40 years of experience as a System Analyst. His being born in England, growing up in South Africa, and now living in New Zealand. His optimistic view that humanity is on the verge of a new age of enlightenment. His trips to Japan, India, and many countries

All these factors make Mr. Jakeman well suited to write this book. People who live across different continents and different countries are often able to see beyond the Matrix (the fake reality) that society and governments impose on humans

This, in turn, makes them the ideal Guide to help other people see beyond Artificial Intelligence/Fake Reality and see Real Intelligence/True Reality

We do hope you will enjoy reading the book and that Quantum Action will help you to attain enlightenment and a higher level of consciousness

  • Editorial Review for Team Amplifiers – 8 Ways Teams Thrive in Rapid Change (Business Leadership & Teamwork) by Eric McDermott

Team Amplifiers – 8 Ways Teams Thrive in Rapid Change – Editorial Review

This is an Editorial Review of Team Amplifiers by Eric McDermott

This Review is written by a Company Leader (C-Level Executive) who has 5 years experience in Leadership Roles in Fortune 500 companies and 15 years experience in Startup Founder and Startup CEO roles

Books Butterfly Editorial Review of Team Amplifiers by Eric McDermott

    Introduction & Context

At its core, Team Amplifiers by Mr. Eric McDermott is a Business Team Leadership and Business Team Building book focused around 8 Team Amplifiers. These Amplifiers are very powerful levers which will transform your team into a Super Team which can

    1. Pivot, Adapt, and Stay Competitive
    2. Look for What’s Next
    3. Adapt to how things will be in the future
    4. Deal quickly with Change
    5. Transform your company into a ‘Ready for Whatever the Future Might Bring’ Super Company

Team Amplifiers is, in many ways, the perfect Business Team Building book for the rapidly changing and constantly evolving business world we currently live in

    Strengths

Perhaps the biggest strengths of this book are the 8 Team Amplifiers

    1. The Four Tiers of Help – This Amplifier deals with team members being able to anticipate what will be required and to get it done proactively
    2. The One Question that Defines Success – This Amplifier is all about finding out What Really Matters, and aligning the Team around it
    3. The So That Test – This Amplifier is about picking strategic objectives. In particular Shared Strategic Objectives that the team can rally around
    4. What by When – This Amplifier helps produce high trust and coordination by specifying exactly What has to be achieved and By When
    5. First Touch Expectations & Communications – This Amplifier is about Setting the Right Expectations and then Managing Expectations well
    6. Retain Next Steps – This Amplifier is about managing External Dependencies and ensuring they do not derail your Team’s Objectives
    7. Fail Smart – This Amplifier is about failing in a smart manner and not treating Failure as Final
    8. Better By Next – This Amplifier is about the Team willing to get better and making it a practice to consistently improve

These Team Amplifiers will really expand and evolve the way you think about Teams. A few of these are incredibly powerful and writing one book per Team Amplifier is something the author should seriously consider

The Four Tiers of Help is incredibly strong because it teaches you how to turn your team from reactive instruction-taking robots to proactive go getters

The One Question that Defines Success, especially when combined with The So That Test, helps your Team define Exactly What Success Is and Exactly What the Team’s Strategic Objectives are. Most teams fail because they don’t really understand what ‘success’ is, and they don’t understand the strategic impact of what they are trying to achieve

The first 3 Team Amplifiers in themselves are powerful enough to take your Team and your Company to the next level. I’ve seen trillion dollar companies and early state startups both struggle with challenges which these 3 Team Amplifiers are designed to solve. It’s beautiful how well these 3 Team Amplifiers are explained and the fact that they are listed right at the start

The What by When amplifier was quite similar to setting SMART Goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time Limited). That should not take away from how powerful it is. Having clarity around exactly What to Achieve and By When to Achieve It is absolutely critical for any Team

My two favorite Team Amplifiers were First Touch Expectations and Fail Smart

    1. First Touch Expectations because for most companies Setting the Right Expectations and Managing Expectations is the key to success and also the key to customer satisfaction
    2. Fail Smart because every company and every team will face failure many times. Being able to deal positively and quickly with failure and power through to success is imperative

Overall, the book is incredibly strong. It’s quite surprising that the book is a quick read given just how powerful these 8 Team Amplifiers are

    Weaknesses

Perhaps the biggest weakness is that each Team Amplifier merits a book in itself. While a short book is easier to read and digest, there really should have been a lot more discussion of each Team Amplifier

The idea of introducing new terms (NextPectations, Chief Next Officer, etc) is a very good idea. However, the author goes a little overboard. For Example: ‘Setting Specific Objectives’ would have been a much better name for the 3rd Team Amplifier than ‘The So That Test’. There’s no need to invent a new term for every Amplifier

The author has a really good set of resources (videos, Forbes articles, a course, a website). However, all this additional content is not well integrated with the book

    Overall Thoughts

This is a very powerful book. The 8 Team Amplifiers are all impactful and a few of them are transformational in terms of how much they would improve your Team and Company if well implemented

I really enjoyed reading this book and ended up taking notes because of how good the book was. Any business leader will enjoy it and benefit from it

Interestingly, this book becomes more valuable the higher up in the company org chart you are

    1. For CEOs and COOs it’s an absolute must read – 100/100
    2. For Team Leaders, it’s a must read – 90/100
    3. For Team Members, definitely something that will help you become a superstar team contributor – 80/100

The ideas in this book are so powerful that it would also be a good idea to bring in Eric McDermott to do company wide or team specific coaching

Team Amplifiers is likely to be one of the 2 or 3 best business books you read all year

    Trigger Warning

    No Triggers

    Overall Recommendation

Team Amplifiers is an absolutely excellent Business Team Building Book and we recommend it for all levels of your company

    1. CEOs/COOs/CFOs/CIOs/Board of Directors – 100/100 and very, very strongly recommended
    2. VP/Middle Management – 100/100 and very strongly recommended
    3. Team Leaders/Lower Management – 90/100 and very strongly recommended
    4. Team Members – 80/100 and strongly recommended

This is a must have Business Book, which is worth reading multiple times

We would also recommend this book for Venture Capitalists and Angel Investors as they would be able to better understand why a startup they have funded is struggling

Curator’s Thoughts (not the reviewer, the curator)

We got a 100/100 recommendation for Team Amplifiers from our C-Level Reviewer and a 80/100 recommendation from our Team Member level reviewer. It’s definitely a very strong Business Team Building and Leadership book

Eric McDermott has managed to create an incredibly powerful book that is also very succinct and easy to read. The cost is that the 8 Team Amplifiers are not discussed in very great detail (something the reader will wish because many of the 8 Amplifiers are game changers)

Over the last 14 years we’ve curated and promoted thousands of Business Books and Business Leadership Books, and Team Amplifiers is in the Top 1%. It’s a real diamond

  • Editorial Review for Team Amplifiers – 8 Ways Teams Thrive in Rapid Change (Business Teamwork Guide) by Eric McDermott

Team Amplifiers – 8 Ways Teams Thrive in Rapid Change – Editorial Review

This is the 2nd Editorial Review of Team Amplifiers by Eric McDermott by the Books Butterfly Editorial Review Team

This Editorial Review is written from the perspective of a Team Member (not yet a Team Leader) who wants to grow into a leadership role

Books Butterfly Editorial Review of Team Amplifiers by Eric McDermott

    Introduction & Context

Over the years, there has been a steady rise in the number of successful start-ups that have managed to successfully compete with large Enterprises. They are able to do so because large Enterprises are very slow to evolve and adapt

Mr. McDermott proposes ‘Team Amplifiers’ – a set of 8 amplifiers which will allow corporations to evolve and adapt fast and to become more efficient. These Amplifiers are all focused on making teams more efficient, more dynamic and more adaptable

    Main Review

Team Amplifiers is a Teamwork and Team Strategy book which will allow Teams, and every member in a Team, to give their best

Perhaps, most importantly, Team Amplifiers will help Teams to deal rapidly with Change and to evolve and meet challenges and opportunities

The majority of people have specific objectives for what they want to accomplish in a given time frame, such as a day, a month, or a year. Everyone has days when they wish they could have been more productive. This book shows how members in your team can accomplish more

Team Amplifiers by Eric McDermott shows that you don’t have to be the team leader to benefit from these 8 ‘Team Amplifiers’. Even if you are not the team leader, you can learn from this book and can contribute more to your team and become a better team member

Team Amplifiers is a direct and succinct Business Guide. The Book is written as a Team Development guide which allows you to make your team stronger and better able to deal with Change. It’s perfect for Team Leaders who want their teams to be more successful and productive. It encourages team leaders to invest in the best resource at hand: their Team

Eric McDermott is a pioneer in helping people grow, accelerate success, and develop their business. In his book, Team Amplifiers, he describes everything needed to measure, manage, and elevate a Team’s Culture. If you’re looking to build a team that can adapt to whatever comes next, this book is for you.

Based on his own experience, including decades of assisting people in learning to be adaptable for what’s next, McDermott founded the company NEXTpectations® and created a new position, Chief Next Officer®, to lead the charge in helping accelerate success. Comprised of eight Team Amplifiers, this Book is designed to help the reader improve their team’s mindset, habits, systems, and plans. By improving these areas, the team and its members can become more productive, happier, and more successful

Eric McDermott offers in-depth guidance on how to enhance each of the eight Team Amplifiers. He frequently gives advice in list-based formats, which is useful for getting a quick overview of the information.

McDermott’s personal experiences also help to make him relatable and trustable. This, in turn, makes his strategies much more achievable and approachable. This book is an easy-to-use resource for increasing your team’s productivity. It is a very powerful book for anyone who wants to become a more impactful team leader (or team member)

    Strengths

The 8 Team Amplifiers are each very powerful in their own right. There are no fillers

The major ideas are well explained and have good examples to help understand them fully

Eric McDermott asks a series of questions at the end of each chapter (there is one chapter devoted to each Team Amplifier). This helps the reader better understand each Team Amplifier

    Weaknesses

There are only 1 or 2 examples for each Team Amplifier. It would have been great to get 3 to 4 examples for each Team Amplifier

The book is somewhat predictable. This is not necessarily a bad thing for a business book

The tying together of the 8 Team Amplifiers is missing. There should have been a few chapters at the end, which would tie everything together. It would also help to have a few chapters that explain the synergies between these 8 Team Amplifiers (and the possible conflicts)

There should have been an in-depth example at the end of the book showing a company incorporating each of these 8 Team Amplifiers one by one. Admittedly, the downside of this would be that the length of the book would double and might scare off some busy team leaders. Perhaps the best solution would be a workbook companion or a second book in the series

    Trigger Warning

    No Trigger Warnings

    Overall Thoughts

Team Amplifiers is a succinct and powerful and impactful book. It will make you rethink what you think about Teams and Team Productivity

Equally importantly, it will give you 8 Team Amplifiers which will allow you to supercharge your Team and empower each Team Member

The amount of value in the book is amazing, and it’s impressive that Mr. McDermott has fit it all into a reasonably sized book

    Overall Recommendation

Strongly Recommended for anyone who wants to lead strong teams and/or be a strong team member

    For Team Leaders – 80/100

    For Team Members – 75/100

Curator’s Thoughts (not the reviewer, the curator)

This is an exceptionally important book. Companies have Teams as their building blocks. Any book that allows a company (or a leader) to unlock the power of these building blocks is worth its weight in gold

Eric McDermott has written exactly such a book

If you are a Team Leader this book is an absolute must read. We had both a Team Leader and a Team Member read and review the book. It was interesting that both had very positive views of the book

While the book is perfect for any Team Leader, it is also a book worth sharing with every Team Member. Many of the 8 Team Amplifiers are things every motivated Team Member would be able to understand and implement themselves. However, Team Members would probably need the help and mentorship of their Manager/Mentor to fully understand and implement all 8 Team Amplifiers

Given that the book is a relatively quick read, we recommend it very strongly. It will give you 8 powerful Team Amplifiers you can leverage to make your own teams much stronger. Even if you don’t relate to all 8 Team Amplifiers, each of the 8 Team Amplifiers is very powerful in itself. You can pick and choose which Amplifiers you want to implement into your own Teams

  • Editorial Review for When Justice Calls (Old West Cowboy Western) by SJ Zeller

When Justice Calls (Cowboy Western Adventure) by SJ Zeller – Editorial Review

This is an Editorial Review of When Justice Calls by SJ Zeller

When Justice Calls is described by readers as an outstanding Old West Cowboy Western with well developed characters. It’s the first in a 5 book series, and a complete book in itself

Books Butterfly Editorial Review of When Justice Calls by SJ Zeller

    Introduction & Context

“When Justice Calls” is a suspenseful Old West Cowboy Western tale set in Sagebrush, Montana. When Federal Marshal JP McAllister is summoned back to Sagebrush, he does not expect to be ambushed by lowlifes. He is even more surprised by the order to hunt his longtime friend and former colleague, Jarvis Tate, who is wanted for murder.

After brief encounters with other war buddies, Sheriff Wallace and Mayor Kay, McAllister soon uncovers the rot in the town’s administration. His once upstanding friends have become perpetrators of murder, nepotism, and corruption- they have no integrity left, no respect for the rule of law. McAllister takes it upon himself to ensure justice is served. Amidst attempted murder, bribery, and manipulation, McAllister renders the ultimate punishment to the villains- the gallows.

    Strengths

Reading the book is an absolute delight from start to finish. The author’s creative use of imagery is evident throughout the book, transporting the reader to the scene with vivid descriptions

The skillful use of suspense keeps the reader engaged and invested in the story, eagerly turning the pages to see what will happen next. In addition, there is spectacular choice in words, scenery, and characters to fit the 1800s setting. The author incorporates informal language and another English dialect without making it difficult for modern readers to understand. The unexpected infusion of humor and sarcasm in multiple scenes makes the book even more enjoyable.

From the beautiful imagery to the engaging story and wonderful writing, this book is a gem no reader should miss. Fans of Old Western tales, suspenseful fiction, or simply great writing would appreciate this book.

    Weaknesses

While it is an interesting and suspenseful read, “When Justice Calls” has a few drawbacks. Some readers may not be familiar with the Southern/Western English dialect and some of the informal words used. However, such instances are rare and unlikely to have any significant effect on the reader’s experience. The different English dialect, although barely used, is appropriate for the late 1800s context

The occasional grammar mistakes may be off-putting for very keen readers but may go unnoticed by the majority

Another minor drawback is that some characters are underdeveloped. While the main characters are well-rounded and interesting, some supporting characters are not given as much depth and may feel like caricatures rather than fully-realized individuals. Understandably, the author may not want to deviate the story from the main characters.

    Trigger Warning

None, as long as the usual Old Western themes don’t scare you

    Overall Thoughts

“When Justice Calls” is an interesting read – short and simple, perfect for both beginners and experienced readers. The plot is engaging and well-paced, and the author’s use of imagery and suspense is impressive

The book effectively captures the feeling of the late 1800s with a vivid and immersive setting that is easy to visualize. The strengths in plot, imagery, and setting compensate for the occasional language and grammar issues

“When Justice Calls” is worth the time for anyone looking for a well-written and engaging Old West Cowboy Western tale.

    Overall Recommendation

We strongly recommend When Justice Calls by SJ Zeller

There is a dearth of high quality Cowboy Westerns in the eBook Stores so it is very encouraging to see a well written and engaging Cowboy Western. Even more encouraging that there is a 5 book series

Curator’s Thoughts (not the reviewer, the curator)

We always struggle to find enough good Cowboy Westerns for our readers. It is one of the few book genres which seems to have a shortage of Authors and Publishers

It’s great to see SJ Zeller delivering a high quality Cowboy Western that will delight and intrigue readers of Cowboy Westerns and Old West Historical Fiction. Even better is that there is a 5 book series, so for readers who like When Justice Calls (we assume most readers will), there are 4 more books to look forward to

It is worth nothing that When Justice Calls is not just a good Cowboy Western, it is a good suspenseful and adventure filled book that any reader will enjoy

  • Editorial Review for Tilted Scales – Inhuman Trafficking (An Urban Fantasy Legal Thriller) by Julian Kindred

Tilted Scales – Inhuman Trafficking (An Urban Fantasy Legal Thriller) – Editorial Review

This is an Editorial Review of Tilted Scales – Inhuman Trafficking by Julian Kindred

Writing a book which is an Urban Fantasy mixed with a Legal Thriller is a precarious endeavor. We were pleasantly surprised that Julian Kindred pulled it off successfully. Tilted Scales is fantastical and fantastic and well worth your time

Trigger Warning: The protagonist of Tilted Scales is a survivor of child trafficking and forced prostitution. She also suffered abuse and sexual assault and physical violence. While there are no graphic scenes, there are several mentions of abuse and other suffering the protagonist went through

Books Butterfly Editorial Review of Tilted Scales – Inhuman Trafficking by Julian Kindred (Gyrfalcon Press)

    Introduction & Context

At the heart of it, Tilted Scales is an exceptionally good read. 100/100 for Urban Fantasy readers, and a solid 80/100 for Legal Thriller & Thriller readers. The book is also a good, satisfying read for anyone who likes Fantasy

The protagonist, Jayne, is half human and half snake (from the waist down), and a very accomplished lawyer. The book does a very good job of drawing the reader into her world and an even better job of making her likeable and relatable

    Strengths

The lead character is very likable and very human (despite being only half human). You will be rooting for her throughout. Basically, the main character is a Superstar and you really connect with her. This is the kind of character that would be amazing in a TV series

The book moves at a good pace and draws you in exceptionally well. It’s one of those rare books which makes you lose track of time

The author does a very good job of showing the reader what the life and life experience of a half human, half snake is like. There are some sweet touches like a reference to The Lincoln Lawyer

The book has a very strong start and maintains momentum throughout. The author manages to keep introducing us to more and more of Jayne’s world, while also moving the story along at a rapid pace

The Fantasy world is very well done. It’s a very good Urban Fantasy world with lots of interesting creatures such as Nagas and Lamias. The author strikes the right balance between introducing new creatures and building a strong connection with the protagonist, Jayne

    Weaknesses

Despite being an excellent book, Tilted Scales has a few noticeable areas for improvement and a few small flaws

Firstly, everyone at the Law Firm other than Jayne (the protagonist) is not as impressive as her. Jayne is both an excellent lawyer and possesses amazing fantasy powers. Apart from her adoptive mother and father (in spirit, not literally), everyone else at her Law Firm are pretty vanilla

Secondly, the book is mostly an Urban Fantasy and the Legal Thriller aspect is more of a back drop. It is an Urban Fantasy set at a Law Firm with a lawyer as the protagonist. It is not really a ‘Legal Thriller’ in the way most legal thriller readers would expect. That being said, the brief courtroom scenes are very well done

Thirdly, all the support characters are too likable. It would have been nice if some of the people supporting Jayne had some shades of gray

    Overall Thoughts

Titled Scales is a splendid read. 100/100 if you love Urban Fantasy. Somewhere between 70/100 and 80/100 if you like Legal Thrillers and/or Thrillers

The first third of the book is good. The second third is brilliant. The final third is very good. Overall, the book is a very satisfying and enjoyable read – An absolute must read for Urban Fantasy readers and a solid read for Thriller readers

    Trigger Warning

The protagonist Jayne has suffered abuse and been forced into prostitution from a very early age. There are lots of triggers in this book for anyone who has suffered violence, abuse, or assault. There are multiple triggers and you can’t really avoid them as they are an integral part of both Jayne’s life experiences and the plot of the book

    Overall Recommendation

We strongly recommend this book to both Fantasy Readers and Thriller readers. Please note that it has only a few courtroom scenes and will disappoint anyone hoping for a courtroom drama or expecting an out and out legal thriller

Overall, this book is a 90/100 for anyone who loves books, and 100/100 for anyone who loves Urban Fantasy. It’s just a very, very good read

  • Editorial Review for Can’t Hide What’s Inside by C. J. Heigelmann

Can’t Hide What’s Inside- Editorial Review

This is an Editorial Review of Can’t Hide What’s Inside by C.J. Heigelmann.

This is a very well written Psychological Thriller, written by a talented and authentic author

Trigger Warning: The book may trigger negative emotions among readers who have experienced mental illness, discrimination, harassment, or physical, sexual, and emotional abuse

Books Butterfly Editorial Review of Can’t Hide What’s Inside by C. J. Heigelmann (Common Folk Press)

‘Can’t Hide What’s Inside’ is a heartbreaking psychological thriller with numerous twists and turns.

    Story Introduction & Context

To break free from the shackles of her mother’s emotional abuse, Madison Sanders moves to Minneapolis for a fresh start. Her optimism is soon quelled by her encounters with misogynistic and abusive co-workers and a devastating tragedy, leaving her craving revenge. The author carefully navigates through sexism, sexual harassment, misogyny, mental illness, and other dark contemporary themes.

    Strengths

Madison’s story will keep you yearning to know what happens next. The author masterfully incorporates thrill and suspense to keep you glued to the book, and the plot gets even more enjoyable with every new chapter. The book is action-packed, from accidental death to lust, love, and deception, to multiple murders and psychopathic tendencies- it is almost impossible to stop reading, especially in the final chapters.

The second half of the book outshines the first. The author tactfully answers critical questions from previous chapters while leaving room for suspense. The thrill intensifies chapter by chapter keeping the reader engaged, with nervous excitement to uncover the next twist of events. The final chapters stir a mix of emotions ranging from sadness, anger, and resentment to excitement and relief.

Many readers today can relate to the key themes: sexism, racism, mental health (anxiety and depression), workplace politics, grieve, loss, and abuse.

The author’s skill is demonstrated in how he crafts a diverse and intense main character (Madison) – a doting mother, a scared and scarred daughter, a loyal friend, a committed employee, a passionate lover, a killer.

The remaining characters are also well-thought out.

The book has a satisfying ending.

    Weaknesses

Despite having a very strong 2nd half, and being suspenseful and engrossing overall, the book has a relatively slow start. It takes a few chapters to get to the more intriguing parts of the story; an inexperienced reader may struggle a bit at the beginning

In the first half of the book, the author drags some dialogues, resulting in monotony, which may put off even the most experienced readers. In other cases, the exchanges are insignificant and unnecessary as the events covered could easily be stated in a sentence or two. A competent editor can address these issues sufficiently.

Further analysis of the book’s content shows that most characters are portrayed in a manner that is not very easy to relate to. The male characters are extreme chauvinists, while some of the female characters appear vapid and naïve. Some of the characters are a bit hard to relate to, making it difficult for the reader to build an emotional connection. Still, these characters may be realistic representations given the context of the story. Most people with an innate tendency to become serial killers are unlikely to be likable or relatable

Trigger Warning – Please be aware that this book has Multiple Triggers

The book may trigger negative emotions among readers who have experienced mental illness, discrimination, harassment, or physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. However, the story is exciting and believable. The book would be an interesting read for people fascinated by contemporary psychological thrillers and crime fiction. Its unpredictability will keep you on the edge of your seat.

    Overall Recommendation

Can’t Hide What’s Inside is an excellent Thriller and well worth your reading time. Strongly Recommended

Curator’s Thoughts (Editor & Curator of the Editorial Review, not the reviewer)

    C. J. Heigelmann is an immensely talented writer we’ve worked with for 5 years (Jan 2018 onwards). His writing is exceptional and it has improved and matured over the years. You can visit his website and see his entire range of books

Can’t Hide What’s Inside continues his trend of producing compelling books. For example, it gets strong praise from Kirkus Reviews, which calls it – An engagingly emotional thriller with surprising plot turns

The book is an excellent thriller and we strongly recommend it

Writing about killers, especially those on the verge of becoming serial killers, is very challenging. These people have a very different nature and it is extremely difficult to portray that. That’s the one aspect we think the book can improve on. To somehow create a stronger connection with the protagonist

Our main takeaway was that the book is a very good read and very well written. As our reviewer notes, if you can stick through the somewhat slower first half, you will be richly rewarded –

    1. The author masterfully incorporates thrill and suspense to keep you glued to the book
    2. It is almost impossible to stop reading, especially in the final chapters

  • Avi Datta Author Interview – Author of The Winding and The Movement (Time Travel Romance Thrillers with Elements of Science Fiction, Romance, and Time Travel)

Thank you for reading this Author Interview with Professor Avi Datta, author of The Winding and The Movement. This Author Interview is in 4 parts

    1. The actual Author Interview (right after the Author photograph)
    2. Links to the Author’s books at Amazon and the Author’s website
    3. Excerpts from the author’s books (The Winding, The Movement)
    4. Additional Thoughts from the Review Saint & Books Butterfly Team

Part 1 – Author Interview with Professor Avi Datta

Q1 Professor Datta, your books transcend genres and have elements of Science Fiction, Romance, and Time Travel. Who would you describe as your ideal reader?

Thank you for the question. The answer is somewhat hidden in the book transcending genres. If you take the whole idea of The Core (explained in The Movement), the non-linearity of time, the aspects of the story are universal. Love, loss, orphanhood, not fitting in, sacrifice, misunderstanding, and death affect us all. So, my books can be enjoyed by those who are not into science fiction. To be honest, I am not sure if genres exist.

An ideal reader would not perceive emotion and logic as mutually exclusive entities but rather as equally important in making decisions. An analogy would be how the balance spring and the hairspring oscillate to mark the time division. In my book, some of the best decisions by Vincent (the protagonist) were made when emotions and logic were in sync. An ideal reader would also be cognizant of the rest of the world and the cultural nuances outside the USA or even the western hemisphere. While, The Winding touches on some nuances associated with racism, The Movement shows some severe problems with monoethnicity in Japan. But these are all woven into the story to make the context more relevant.

Q2 You have a unique background: a Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at Illinois State University and an accomplished scholar in Technology Strategy and Strategic Entrepreneurship. Why the move into writing books? What role do you think your unique background and skills play in the writing of your books?

I wouldn’t characterize myself as an accomplished scholar. There are moments when I am disenchanted by the reality I am living in. So I decided to create another world. It’s not perfect, but it has far more interesting characters. I am still actively pursuing my research and academia.

I extensively studied great technologies that fail and terrible ones that succeed. In my doctoral dissertation, I looked at three million citation patterns across 200,000 patents in the IT Sector. I also looked at some of the most foundational inventions in the world. If IBM had not invented the magnetic card reader, we might not have Silicon Valley. Before creating the inventor—Vincent Abajian—I had to decide what could be a foundational innovation for the future. I read Nature AI, scoured through the UPSTO website, and concluded that transferring consciousness between humans and machines would be one such invention. To invent that, what other inventions do we need? There are no 50,000 pressure-point digital pens or a hologram you can pull out of a screen wearing sensory gloves. But to create the character Vincent, I had to conjure those up. There are plausible inventions. I have an imaginative mind, which helps in my academia and this as well. When I wrote The Winding in 2020, Rolex did not have a 41 mm Oyster Perpetual. But they launched one in 2021, making it perfect for the setting in 2023. BMW did not have a seven-series EV when I wrote The Winding. Now they do, which makes it authentic to the setting of The Winding in 2023 and 2024. My education has forged a way to imagine products for the future.

Q3 Your books challenge the core assumption that causality and time are linear. What exactly does it mean? What happens when a reader reads your book and questions the general assumption that causality and time are linear. Is this not opening up Pandora’s Box? Is the everyday reader equipped to handle this scary new reality that time and causality are not linear?

We measure time by the earth’s rotation around its axis and its revolution around the sun. As a child, I was fascinated by wheels and any circular motion and got depressed to see that their progress was measured linearly. This was also true for time. All the beautiful hand-finished details inside the movement for just measuring time linearly? (I still struggle with time when represented in digits.) Then I read a paper that stated past and future are just perceptions. It made logical sense because the Universe itself would not care how time is measured on earth. So I began to ask whether my instrument of Universe-time existed on earth. And what if someone can tinker with the synchronicity of earth and Universe time. Is this gift a curse? But that will only give us context, not a story. The story is about how specific universal themes, like love, loss, and greed, would evolve in such a context.

If one is too scared to open pandora’s box, then none of the great things we enjoy will come to fruition. At times, I think I should have just written one book. I have meddled too much in the lives of Vincent, Akane, and Emika. They are more real to me than most people around me.

Q4 With recent advances in AI, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google sharing some of its AI projects, and various AI Art programs becoming popular, many people are worried about what impact AI will have on humanity. What are your thoughts on AI’s recent rapid progress?

AI’s rapid progress will only pose a threat if humans don’t make progress. I don’t fear singularity, where a robot is indistinguishable from a human. I fear the opposite, where human thoughts and creativity look rudimentary and mechanistic.

AI’s rapid progress is something I am very optimistic about. AI can be used to better predict the weather, which will benefit farmers. If cars drive themselves, we would not need parking lots. My car will drop me off and come home. Humans are a product of six million years of evolution. So, machines won’t just take over. Yes, some jobs will erode. But that does not mean automation will lead to the extinction of humanity. If taxed creatively, excess profits from automation may lead to a Universal Basic Income, which should be higher than the wages earned from displaced jobs.

Q4B Professor Datta, do you think AI can replace human writers?

Magnus Carlsen is still the Grandmaster, right? At the most rudimentary level, AI recognizes and analyses patterns from predetermined inputs and applies context. With time, it learns more and refines. Something humans do. Many creative works—books, music, and literature have become formulaic. We take a structure and forcefully inject a story. This is also true for academic writing in journals. Some papers are so structurally similar that finding the uniqueness in context has become a rather dull challenge.

Instead of blaming AI for displacing writers, why don’t the creative content makers be more creative? I think the competition from AI will make authors leave their familiarity traps and compel them to make something more exciting. Who knows, we may see AI and humans teaming up to create exciting stories in the future.

Q5 What books and movies are similar to your books? Which authors are most similar to you as an Author?

From the non-linear standpoint, I would say movies like Inception and Mr. Nobody are similar. Story-wise, the manga Shingeki no kyojin (very different context) has non-linear causality. If you look at some of the universal themes in my book, you can find them in the works of Makoto Shinkai. I often cut a scene in my book and get to it when it becomes relevant. I found Satoshi Kon, a Japanese film director, to do the same.

Q6 Was there a particular book, experience, or moment that inspired you to become a writer? If so, please share.

In 1994, I dreamed of speaking with a girl fluently in Japanese. Trains were flying over buildings, and I was bidding goodbye to her. I ignored it and dived into Calculus, Statistics, and Quantum Mechanics. The dream reappeared again in 2020, and I could see the sunset in her eyes this time. So I named her Akane and started fleshing out the story. I wrote the story so that I wouldn’t forget it.

Q7 Your first book has racked up a lot of rewards in a short period, including the best Science Fiction Romance Novel from the Global Book Awards in 2022 and Top 5 Science Fiction Time Travel Books from Reader’s Favorite. As a first-time author, how/why did your book do so well? How could you bypass the common traps first-time authors fall for (the wrong editor, a lack of polish, not focusing on one series, not knowing how to market, not being able to capture their thoughts concisely and elegantly, etc.)?

Luck might play an important role. I wanted to write something different, and not being trained as an author, I did not know what I could not write. I did have a terrible editorial experience. This was during a very challenging time as well. The world was slowly reeling from COVID, and none of the literary agents I contacted wrote back. I was also not willing to go on their social media and write a book they wanted to read. I was not aware of resources available to indie authors as well. So I went to a platform and shortlisted three editors for structural edits. One agreed, one said that the book was too immature, and the third one never responded. The one who agreed took four months and had suggestions that showed they had never read the book. According to the editor, Akane was Vincent’s daughter. Even if I wrote a greek tragedy, that would not be possible. I looked into the editor’s Microsoft Word metadata. The total time spent writing the review sheet was 37 minutes. I did not lodge a complaint because that would mean wasting time and money.

Another thing I learned was impressions don’t sell books. And impressions can be bought. I think indie publishing or self-publishing is an excellent disruptor to the non-competitive world of traditional publishing houses that more or less bank on celebrities writing their memoirs. But, with the rise of self-publishing, we also see an increase in sneaky services that promise a lot and deliver nothing. New authors often get tempted to actively seek out bloggers. Which, in my opinion, is a waste of time as well. Editorial reviews are essential because google often indexes them at the top. I spend most of my time such that it is spent on the story itself.

My distributor, Bublish, has been quite good with matching editors I work with. I take editorial comments very seriously because they are the first outside my friends circle or me to have read my book with no bias. Distancing oneself from work is perhaps the best advice I learned from my professors. I still don’t know how markets work. And I have a Ph.D. in Business.

Regarding capturing thoughts elegantly, I have a condition—synesthesia (the production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body).I saw the best cherry blossoms when I shut my eyes and listened to Chopin’s Andante Spianato e Grande Polonaise Brilliante Op.22.

Q8 What can we expect from you next? Will you be expanding the Time Corrector series after The Reset, or will it be a 3 book series? Would you be starting a new book series? Will you be branching into other genres?

I would like to see The Time Corrector getting translated into other languages. The story has global apparel, and we must understand that some people don’t read and write in English. The series would make an excellent series on television, animated or live action. But I don’t know who offers such services.

I am already conceptualizing a new story (genre-bending as well). I am still debating whether it will extend the Time Corrector Universe, especially after The Reset. While I don’t want to further stir the lives of Akane and Emika, I find it increasingly difficult to bid goodbye. It is not easy for me to imagine Akane mainly as just a figment of my imagination. I talk to her every day, in Jap-lish.

Q9 Professor Datta, do you think humans will be able to time travel at some point? If so, in how many years do you envision this happening? How do you think humans and humanity will be affected when this happens?

I hope so. Living in a world where time is linear is so profoundly dull. I have not studied physics to the extent of answering this question. But during my first semester as a Ph.D. student at Washington State, my roommate was a Ph.D. student in Physics. He said that even if it were possible, people emerging from such a device might be very different from what they were when they entered it. Assuming we get past that and devise a way to make it work, what then? Can I selectively change an aspect of my life, assuming everything else will be constant? If humanity decides to travel back in time, and undo certain things, then I am sure they will do something equal or more catastrophic.

The aspect of living in a world designed by the flawed choices we make is ruthless but also feeds into imagination and creativity.

Q10 Given your background (Professor of Strategy, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship), is it surprising you jumped into writing Fiction instead of a Business Strategy book? What was the reason for this? Will you write a book on Business Strategy or Entrepreneurship in the future?

I wanted to write something that’s not a tranquilizer for the insomniac. But isn’t there strategy and entrepreneurship in the series? Let’s examine. Having access to scarce resources is key to strategy. Politics surrounding access to intreton and control of intreton is extraordinarily strategic. What about the ability to tinker with time itself? Isn’t it a capability worth having? How far will you push to get such a capability in your grasp? In book two (The Movement), we will see some challenges to running a startup, especially when angel investors have a different view than Vincent. Of course, the treatment is more dramatic here. As the firm grows, we will see a shift from a startup mindset to a more managed entity mindset.

If I do write a book on entrepreneurship, I will make it stand out from the crowd. I have something in mind that might get translated into more than one language.

Q11 You are a very skilled and avid painter. How do your experience and expertise in art affect your writing? Did the experience of writing your books impact your art style or how you viewed your art?

Thank you. I have been painting since I was three. Painting keeps me imaginative. Some reviewers have commented that my writing is very pictorial, screen-ready, or like watching a movie. I picture every scene, the character’s clothes, and how the light reflects. Art, for me, has a more significant impact on my writing than reading.

I chose writing to express my imagination because I didn’t know how to show a beautifully flawed character beaten by realities through my brush. And yes, my writing has impacted how I perceive art. In the summer of 2022, I spent three months in Japan as a visiting scholar in innovation. That gave me insights into their rich culture and helped me flesh out Akane’s character. My future paintings will draw a lot of inspiration from woodblock paintings. Also, my concept of beauty has undergone a gradual transformation through my writing.

Q11B Which do you think is tougher – getting visibility as an author or a painter?

Both. But I have much less desire to share my paintings than my writings.

Q12 You are a big Coffee aficionado and have your own ‘Coffee Lab.’ What Coffee making secrets would you like to share with readers?

My coffee lab has become insufficient to experiment with my theoretical knowledge of pulling espresso shots. I need a flat burr grinder and an E-61 head with flow control. But few inexpensive habits can drastically change how one’s coffee tastes.

    1. If a coffee does not have a roast date (not a best-by date), don’t buy it.
    2. Weigh your beans. For pour, a good ratio is 1/15. For every 1 gram of coffee, you get 15 grams of water.
    3. The darker the roast, the lower the brew temperature.
    4. Well-brewed good coffee is not supposed to be bitter.
    5. A great espresso machine cannot neutralize a bad grind. Grinder > Espresso machine.

Q13 Professor Datta, on the website, you give hints about your characters drawing parts of themselves from you. Are they a mix of you and other people you have known, or are they primarily fictional with a few elements of yourself mixed in?

Interesting questions. According to one of my former graduate assistants. “Basically, Vincent is, you on steroids, right?” Then she tapped on her chin, asking, “So who is Akane?”

My answer: “The investigation is ongoing.”

I have met several characters in academia. And I have found that academicians with lower accomplishments prefer to add the title ‘Dr’ before their name. I have added that to my book. The rude TSA at the end of Book 1 is one I met in Atlanta. I would say most of the characters are primarily fictional, with characters of people I know sprinkled over them. Hulk is entirely based on my dog, Bruce the magnificent.

The most fictional is Akane and Emika’s characters. I may have poured all my love into creating them as Hajime Isayama may have done for Mikasa (Attack on Titan). I hope the book reaches Akane’s hand one day.

Q14 After reading your books, what other authors and books would you recommend for readers who can’t wait until 2024 for your third book? To satisfy readers’ new-found curiosity about the lack of linearity of time and causality

I would recommend A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawkins, the whole Attack on Titan manga, and the movie Paprika.

Part 3 – Excerpts from The Winding and The Movement

3A -> Excerpt from The Winding Chapter 1

I can barely keep my eyes open with the makeup lights glaring at my face. Sophie, the show’s stylist, struggles to make my face presentable, using all kinds of pigments. She sees a little sweat on my forehead and quickly rubs it. The chair is squeaky, with no lumbar support, and I shift uncomfortably. I’ve placed my briefcase and scarf on the chair next to me. The wall opposite the mirror has eight posters of Maurice Johnson, the host.

“Nervous, Dr. Abajian?” Sophie asks around the makeup brush in her mouth.

    “A little.”

“I didn’t think you would be.” She takes the brush off her mouth. “I saw how you rebuked the senators in the hearing. That was totally awesome.” Her eyes glow.

I shut my eyes and recall every incident that led me to the Senate floor in April this year.

    “They had it coming.”

“Dr. Abajian? Did you mean it when you said that politicians can be replaced with algorithms?” she asks, squinting at me.

I smile. “Yes. And it doesn’t have to be a complicated one either.”

She fans the brush across my face. “It will be just a sec.” As she leans closer, the top note of her perfume is revealed—jasmine. Then she leans away again to look at her art, smiling. “You have nice wavy hair.”

    “Thank you, Sophie.”

She puts her brush back and contemplates for a second. “Can I ask you a favor?”

    “Sure.”

After reaching into her bag, she hands me a paperback of The Time Fixer: Three Lives of Philip Nardin. I scribble, “Dear Sophie, The future has already happened. But you can change it, Vince—August 15, 2024.”

Grabbing the book with both hands, she jumps up and down. “Thanks so much. Can I take a selfie with you?”

“Absolutely, but you should know I am not on social media.”

She tilts her head. “I know that.” Then she gets uncomfortably close to me, pouts her lips, and snaps a selfie. “Jim will come and get you soon. It was totally awesome to meet you.”

    I blink. “Likewise, Sophie.”

She leaves, waving at me as she goes out the door.

Alone again, my mind starts racing, and my chest begins to pound. What questions will Maurice ask? About my book? About my performance in the Senate that put three senators in jail? Those are easy ones. What if he asks about my personal life?

I snap my fingers. Sparks transform into a miniature core—a white luminant sphere levitating an inch over my palm. As I examine the sphere, I think about what it means. I am the key to the time turbulence, a secret I discovered only a few days back. Inside the time turbulence, I can change the past and the future. Closing my palm, I dissolve the core. Mr. Kruger never revealed what I could do with the sparks, and only recently had I understood why—I had to find out myself.
I straighten my necktie and adjust my pocket square. The necktie button has gotten looser. I’ve lost fifteen pounds, five of which were since August 13, when I did the unthinkable. Yes, given the task’s magnitude, I’d had my doubts—my incompetence with the sparks to create turbulence. And, even if I could muster the power, should I? Emika would forget me. But, as my resolve strengthened, I could create turbulence through these sparks. There was no stopping me. Emika is now free, and I am OK with her not remembering me. Maybe that’s why she never returned my voicemail that I left on August 13. But that dream this morning… Is she coming back?

I lift my cuff to look at my watch. It’s 4:25 p.m. My JLC Reverso is now ticking beautifully at 21,600 vibrations per hour, 6 ticks per second. But it stops when I enter my property, just like all my mechanical watches. It means only one thing—my action on the thirteenth removed my property from this reality.

Which dial goes better with my blue shirt and charcoal plaid suit? Is the white dial with local time or the black dial with GMT—Emika’s time? Let’s toss a coin. I throw a penny into the air, and there’s a knock on the door. As soon as the door opens, I can hear the crowd chanting “Maurice, Maurice” against the poorly orchestrated sound of the trumpet, drums, and bass guitar. Jim comes forward. “We are ready for you.” The coin lands on my left palm. Showtime.

3b – Excerpt from The Movement

Not knowing the nature of this trick, I blurt out with a shaky voice, “Are you lost?”

My jaw drops as she turns around. Her smile is radiant, from her beaming lips to her glinting eyes flickering in restrained tears. She locks her gaze with mine, then brings her hands to her mouth and breathes deeply.

What trick is this? I look at my JLC Reverso. It’s ticking—six ticks per second. So, we are not removed from reality. As I look back at her face, my tears gush as if they were waiting for this moment.

I know your face; it stands out among millions in Shibuya. It’s deeply etched in my memory. I have sketched your face, imagining how you might look growing up. And boy, was I right. I don’t cry before humans, but you are everything.

Her face gets all blurry as tears block my eyes.

But I can’t rub my eyes; what if, at that moment, you disappear again?

I want to hold this image forever. I don’t want to wake up if this is a dream. How did this happen? Is it linked to my first trip to the core, which I faintly remember? I don’t care how or why. My nature to seek logic is diminished because of the miracle before my eyes.

Blinking back her tears, she comes closer and grabs the lapel of my robe. Smiling, she tilts her head and says, “Not anymore.”

Flurries begin to drop—gently savoring every last second of the air before reaching the earth and disappearing. She drops her trench coat on the bluestone patio. I see her wristwatch—a platinum Philippe Dufour. Her skin glows against her short-sleeved, cobalt-blue, bell-bottomed jumpsuit. The belt, tied like a bow on the right side of her waist, is made from the same cloth. She shimmers, brighter than her platinum bracelet lined with an array of two-carat diamonds. She takes off her jade chopsticks, and her silky hair falls to her waist. Stepping back into the open, she twirls around and lets the flurries touch her slender arms. Each flurry sparkles and glints as they get close to her skin. Light shimmers more brightly around her.

She turns to me and smiles, squeezing her eyes into two lines of thick eyelashes. Opening her eyes wide, she says, “I told you I’d be back before the flurries, right?”

I fall to my knees. I shut my eyes as every moment without her reflects back at me. My voice trembles as I respond, “You left out the thirty-three years part.” When I look up at her, she touches my head. “I told you not to go,” I rasp. “How could you just leave me like that? I kept waiting and waiting. How could you be so cruel, Akane? Are you gonna disappear again?”

This is the first time the flurries are touching my skin since she left me. I forgot what they looked like, what they felt like. I open my palm to see the flurries drop, float on my tears, and dissolve.

Part 4 – Additional Thoughts on The Winding and The Movement

These books are very unique – Books that not only will entertain you, they will also expand your view of reality and will nourish your mind

The author is a Professor of Strategy, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship at Illinois State University and also a talented Artist. He combines academic rigor with creativity and the books are splendid. As one reviewer put it -> This is one of those books that you are proud to leave on your bookshelf for years to come.

It’s very unusual for a new author to win awards with their first book. The fact that The Winding has won multiple awards within its first year of launch is perhaps one of the best indicators that these are high quality books and well worth your time
